'How often in our lives do we think similar thoughts as are so eloquently written about by the world’s great poets and philosophers?” Jonah paused for a moment.... “Who wrote?”
‘Our birth is but a sleep and a forgetting:
The Soul that rises with us, our life's Star,
Hath had elsewhere its setting,
And cometh from afar:
Not in entire forgetfulness,
And not in utter nakedness,
But trailing clouds of glory do we come
From God, who is our home:
Heaven lies about us in our infancy!'
Jonah looked around the class, wondering if anyone would raise their hand. He waited and a young lady with Native American features volunteered.
“Wordsworth wrote an ode that contained those words.'
'Yes, very good. It is part of the fifth section of Wordsworth’s ode called Intimations of Immortality.'
Jonah scanned the faces of the other students. 'Think about these words for a moment if you will. Do you sometimes wonder if the very grand design of our own being is something more than can be seen from within the borders of our ordinary lives? Are we more than just matter occupying space, perhaps even eternal in some way with both a past and a future never ending? To comprehend the meaning of our lives and life in general is in fact the most innate desire for humans that truly care about themselves and others. Understanding the value of life is a major part of understanding its meaning.”

“As a student of philosophy and specifically epistemology we must clearly understand the nature of knowledge and how to arrive at truth. “Einstein wrote in one of his essays, ‘How strange is the lot of us mortals! Each of us is here for a brief sojourn; for what purpose he knows not, though he sometimes thinks he senses it. But without deeper reflection one knows from daily life that one exists for other people -- first of all for those upon whose smiles and well-being our own happiness is wholly dependent, and then for the many, unknown to us, to whose destinies we are bound by the ties of sympathy.’ These words from the mind of the world’s most brilliant physicist amaze me every time I read them. Yet even the genius of this great man could not comprehend a personal God. Einstein remained agnostic in the end even though he perceived the greater purpose and good of man.”
'I believe understanding the nature of God is more than a matter of belief. Just as with anything that we cannot see or understand, there is still the process of discovery. Where would mankind be if every time we were faced with ideas or concepts that we couldn’t immediately comprehend or believe we closed our minds to the possibility? Most of you have never seen an atom, nor do you have an in-depth understanding of nuclear physics, but most, if not all of you, believe the world is made up of atomic matter and energy. Anyone believe otherwise?” Jonah paused for another moment.

'C.S. Lewis wrote in The Screwtape Letters, ‘Humans are amphibians...half spirit and half animal...as spirits they belong to the eternal world, but as animals they inhabit time.’ What do you think he meant by this statement?' He could see many of the students thinking over what he just asked. There was a genuine interest emanating from the body of the class.
'Perhaps as humans there is a part of our being that centers on the eternal, while another part is anchored to this physical world of space and time in a constant state of change and sometimes conflict.'
'We can begin to understand our amphibian nature when we recognize that there’s more to our being than the physical awareness of our being, that we are more than the total of our neurons and synapses, that the prime truth of all truths is that within each of us an eternal spirit resides. There must be something sacred about the origin and ongoing existence of the spirit. The question we should ask ourselves if we are to truly ever understand the sacredness of life is, can life exist without the spirit? Is it possible that the soul or spirit is the life force and character of a human being, for without it we do not exist, and as such the human soul is the primary reason why life is sacred?”

“Is it possible we are here on this earth for a purpose, and God desires with all His heart that each of us achieve our full potential and learn about love in general and His love specifically?'
'I think many people want to believe in God. I think many even say they believe in God. But actually they probably believe more in the idea of God until they come to know Him. What I mean to know God is to love God. To love Him so much that we listen with our most inner self, even our spirit, to His words and we understand more clearly that obedience to His teachings and His commandments is how we show Him we truly care. We cannot make our own rules or justify exceptions.”
“I am going to talk about a few things which some, if not many of you, might have different opinions. It is not my intention to disrespect anyone, but when one talks about the sacredness of life, there needs be a definitive understanding of what that really means.”
“One of the objectives of this course is to teach that it is not for us to judge but to come to a better understanding, perhaps even a true knowledge of the nature of life.... With these thoughts in mind, to understand more clearly the meaning of life in its broadest spectrum, almost always requires a belief that goes beyond the mortal boundaries of life on this earth.

'My people base their existence on faith. They believe that this is the fourth creation of life, the preceding three ending in destruction. In order to end this cycle of destruction, we know that we must lead the messenger to the sacred place of the great truth.'
“I see that you are having a difficult time believing this truth,” Sevansi said. She stood up and motioned to him to rise. “I want to show you something.” She walked towards the side of the mesa and followed a trail for several minutes.

“Professor Riverstone is a pilot. Flight records show him in the area during each of the known occurrences. He flies up to Winslow Airport, borrows a loner jeep from a friend and drives up to the reservation. The energy spikes seem to happen while he is physically located on the reservation....'
'Well General Rogers, the only pattern that even comes close to the energy readings recorded by our satellites is that which occurs near a black hole or perhaps even the more theoretical wormhole.”
“Is there any proof that he’s directly or indirectly involved?”
“No sir, none whatsoever. We have no idea how anyone could be. That’s why we have agents covertly assigned to him full time since last week...”
The general dismissed everyone except Matt. “Tell me your private thoughts on this matter. I know you well enough to know you keep certain things close to the vest.”
“General, do you have any idea how much potential energy there is in a wormhole, even a small one?”
General Rogers just stared ahead.
