Requirements

Tenant to Tenant Migration in Office 365. The number of Office 365 adoptions among organizations is rapidly increasing by the day. Often, organizations have to deal with multiple Office 365 accounts in situations like mergers and acquisitions. Nowadays, time and requirements have been changed, and Thunderbird users are shifting from Thunderbird to Office 365. Keeping eyes on today’s needs and working environment, Office 365 is the best alternative to replace Mozilla Thunderbird. Because the protocol Thunderbird uses to connect to Office 365 is different than clients like Apple Mail and Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac, it will use different folders for some of the primary folders.

Office 365 email access with Thunderbird requires Thunderbird version 77.0b1 or newer.

Step 1

Open Thunderbird. A window will pop up asking about Setting Thunderbird as your Default Client. If it is your default email client, click on “Set as Default”. If not, click on “Skip Integration”

Go to Account Settings.

  • From a Windows PC: right-click on the top of window, select Menu Bar, then to go Tools> Account Settings
  • From a Mac: go to top of screen, click on Tools > Account Settings.

In the Mail Account Setup window, please enter the following:

  • Your name: Enter your full name here.
  • Email address: Enter your primary email address (i.e. first.last@rochester.edu, username@xx.rochester.edu)
  • Password: Enter your password associated with your username.

When finished, click Continue.

Thunderbird will attempt to find the correct settings, but if it cannot, you may receive this message, which is normal.

In this case, please click on the Manual config button and provide the following settings:

  • Incoming:
    • Server hostname: outlook.office365.com
    • Port: Auto
    • SSL: Autodetect
    • Authentication: Autodetect
  • Outgoing:
    • Server hostname: smtp.office365.com
    • Port: Auto
    • SSL: Autodetect
    • Authentication: Autodetect
  • Username: Enter your username.

Step 7

Once all settings are entered, click on Re-test. If the settings are correct, you will see the following message:

Click Done. Now the mailbox will appear and start to populate.

Because the protocol Thunderbird uses to connect to Office 365 is different than clients like Apple Mail and Microsoft Outlook 2011 for Mac, it will use different folders for some of the primary folders. To be consistent, we highly recommend you follow these steps below to minimize confusion if you also use Office 365 web or a different desktop email client.

Thunderbird O365 Setup

Thunderbird is a free, open-source product and there isn't a vendor for us to escalate to. We will try to help troubleshoot but in the end you might need to visit forums for solutions. This article is correct as of 8/29/2019 to setup an account from scratch. It isn't intended for changing settings when people are migrated. Customers will need to remove their account from Thunderbird and follow the steps below.

If you run into trouble and are faculty/staff you should speak with your local IT pro about using officially supported email clients.

After downloading and installing it, follow these directions to configure Thunderbird to get your email from the Exchange system. These directions will work for both the Mac and Windows Thunderbird clients.

Configure Thunderbird for Email

  1. In the Mail Account Setup window, enter:
    • Your name: Last name, First name (i.e., Smith, John)
    • Email address: yournetid@illinois.edu
    • Password: Your AD password
    • Remember Password: (optional, your choice)
  2. Click Continue. Thunderbird will lookup your server information and default to the IMAP protocol.
  3. Click Done.
Thunderbird is now configured to connect to Exchange Online and should show the following:

Thunderbird Office 365 Setup

  • The incoming address for Exchange Online (Office 365) mailboxes is: outlook.office365.com via STARTTLS on port 143 with Normal Password Authentication
  • The outgoing address for Exchange Online (Office 365) mailboxes is: smtp.office365.com via STARTTLS on port 587 with Normal Password Authentication
  • Username: yournetid@illinois.edu
